The question of today’s podcast episode is...can you eat organic and practice intuitive eating? This episode may need a part two to explain more about what was discussed and get in more detail about the reasons to eat organic for your health, the health of our community and the health of the planet- but think of this as a starter conversation, making sure first you’re in a healthy place with your external health values, like eating organic, and making decisions that are aligning within the final principle of intuitive eating, called honor your health with gentle nutrition.

 

While you are going to hear me share my personal views on why I eat organic in  this episode, I believe it is so important to think critically and think for yourself when it comes to anything in the health and wellness world. I would even take it a step further to say I believe those who are against eating organic make valid and important arguments. I believe those messages, from fellow non-diet dietitians, are important to understand and listen to: it can definitely be tricky to say it's okay to recommend or personally eat organic in a world that would make us believe we are morally superior for doing so.

 

But, that’s not my special sauce. My special sauce has always been helping you find the gray area with health and wellness. Helping you see that wellness has SO many tools in the toolbox, you can pick and choose what you’d like. I hope you leave this episode knowing that it’s okay to never eat organic and to eat organic, both are okay- you choose what is best for you.

I also wanted to share- that it is my hope that you and I can personally challenge others in the health and wellness space, including proponents of the organic movement, to better understand what is diet culture and remove it from their language and how they share their message. I’ve always said “diet culture infused health and wellness world” because I do believe it's possible to create a non-diet centric health and wellness world. 

 

So to answer the question of the episode the answer is: yes...but with explanation necessary. In this episode we discuss:

  • How to apply the final principle of intuitive eating where authentic health meets inner attunement and external health values

  • The importance of being non-obsessive and avoid extreme and absolute thinking with health habits, including eating organic

  • Privilege that comes along with the ability to eat organic

  • My personal reasons for eating organic including improving the health of our lands, farms and soils, biodiversity, and the health of the workers

  • Flaws with organic labeling, choosing local and seasonal in your area first and foremost
